Speech & Language Developmental Milestones

If you have questions or concerns regarding your child's speech and language development you can call us at anytime. The following is a list of some speech and language milestones by age. It is recommended that you refer your child for a speech and language assessment if he or she is not yet meeting the milestones.

By 12 months

  • vocalizes with a variety of sounds

  • says first words

  • turns and looks when name is called

  • waves 'bye' when you say 'bye'

  • follows simple directions when paired with gestures

By 18 months

  • uses 20-30 words

  • imitates spoken words

  • follows simple directions with and without gestures

  • engages in pretend play(e.g. pretending to give a doll a drink)

2 years

  • uses 50+ words

  • combines 2 words together

  • follows 2-step directions

  • asks simple questions

  • is understood by others 50% of the time

3 years

  • combines 3 words to form short sentences

  • uses pronouns (e.g. I, you, he)

  • uses word endings to mark early expressive grammar

  • is understood by others 75% of the time

4 years

  • asks many questions

  • uses complete sentences

  • can tell a simple story

  • is understood by familiar and unfamiliar listeners most of the time

5 years

  • understands most adult language

  • can talk about past, present, future and imaginary events

  • uses correct grammar most of the time

  • can identify letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make
